Architectural Designer at OWLarchitecture.com

Employment Background – Updated 2025

…………

Hello,

From an early age, I loved walking in the countryside and always imagined becoming an architect. However, my secondary school teachers advised against architecture as a career, and I initially followed their guidance.

I began my professional journey studying Quantity Surveying at Liverpool Polytechnic. Interestingly, both staff and fellow students suggested I was better suited to architecture than surveying—so I took their advice. After a year travelling across New Zealand, I enrolled at Kingston Polytechnic, where I earned my BA, Diploma, and RIBA Part III qualifications.

Although my CV appears extensive, I have worked for a relatively small number of companies, including North British Housing Association Developments. Many entries reflect concurrent roles rather than a simple chronological sequence. I have also rejoined previous employers in new capacities and locations over time. In 2006, after completing a three-year QA role at DLG Architects, I sought a fresh challenge and co-founded OWLarchitecture with a former colleague.

My experience spans a wide range of building types and procurement methods. Over the years, I have held diverse roles within architectural practice—from freelance student to Managing Director of a 70-strong firm (RG Partnership Ltd)—giving me the versatility to tackle any challenge.

I hold an MSc in IT in Property and Construction from Salford University. Technologically adept, I have worked with MicroStation and AutoCAD, and now primarily use Revit with BIM capabilities.

  • 2003: Watson & Batty Architects, Guiseley – Healthcare and Schools Projects
  • 2004: DLG Architects, Leeds and London
  • 2007: Founded OWLarchitecture, later evolving into OWLarchitecture.com and back.

My business philosophy is simple: to earn a living by creating quietly functional and competent buildings, rather than building a company for sale.

I also provide occasional consultancy to other industry firms, complementing my core focus on project delivery.

Projects typically range from £5,000 to £5 million and are often commissioned by end-user clients such as homeowners, community groups, church schools, dentists, and GPs.

Refurbishment work frequently emphasises energy efficiency, space optimisation, natural light, ventilation, and insulation.

Random Commissions have included, CAD services for Contracts/Subcontractors and Drawing work for negotiating Leases and Local Authority Rates.

Many thanks for your interest

Regards

Grahame White
